Can Advertising Stop Smoking?
Yesterday, The New York Times released a very interesting article about California and how the tobacco control program of the California Department of Health’s advertising campaign encourages its residents to quit smoking. This article raised a very interesting point; can advertising discourage a behavior, like smoking?
According to the article, from 1990 when the program began until 2009, the last year for which data is available, the smoking rate for adults in California declined 42 percent. This number is astounding. Maybe there is some validity in advertising in which their main message is not selling a product but is rather un-selling a behavior.
