9 Tips for Staying Healthier This Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is that time of year when couples across the country share in a day of joy between each other. There are many of ways in which people celebrate this day with their lover but one of the most popular is through sharing a meal together, either at home in front of candlelight, or going out to dinner at a nice restaurant.

Are you excited about Valentine’s Day but afraid it might affect your diet? Whether you are in the office sharing conversation hearts with co-workers or opening up that box of chocolates from that special someone, here are 9 tips that will help keep you and yours from slipping off the path of your new and healthy lifestyle.

1. Replace Valentines Day candy with something of more permanence. Different examples of such things including writing a poem showing your love towards that person, putting together a collage of different events you shared together the previous year (months) with them or even taking the time to craft together a homemade card that shows you care about them and expresses your feelings.

2. Make sure to have some one on one time. With technology and smart phones today people are always staying connected to their devices, take some time off from being “on-call” and share uninterrupted time together. Start putting together a puzzle or break out an old board game you both will enjoy playing together. This will help to relieve stress from always answering emails or calls and will add to your healthy lifestyle for the evening.

3. Send healthier treats with your kids to their school party! Does your child have an upcoming Valentine’s Day party? Instead of those candy hearts or chocolates, send with them a healthier snack item.

4. What about dinner? So many couples during the holiday like to go out to dinner together. If you are one that is heading out to dinner, be sure to watch your calorie intake. Skip that craving appetizer in the beginning and if you are getting dessert at the end, share one instead of each of you getting one.

5. Cooking at home? Head online to your favorite recipe site and pick out a heart healthy recipe to try. Make an event out of it and each of you participate in the preparation of the meal. For the dishes afterwards, well sounds to me like a rock-paper-scissor event!

6. Make an impact on your community and schedule a time for the two of you to volunteer for a local non-profit. Remember giving is a great way to make you feel better and relieve stress!

7. How about a Fruit Basket! You see flowers made out of fruit and delicious fruit baskets at local stores more and more now. Even better, stop by your local produce store and make the fruit basket yourself. This will save you from giving out candy and be a fun event picking out specific fruit for placement in your basket.

8. During Valentine’s Day boxes of chocolates come in all different shapes and forms. Heck, they are one of the most shared gifts during this February holiday. This year, instead of opening up that heart-shaped box of chocolates and devouring them all in one sitting, put the box in the freezer and treat yourself to one piece a day. This will give you something to look forward to each day and also help keep your diet in focus.

9. Finally its Valentine’s Day but you still need to get some exercise; take your date on romantic walk. It’s a great way to spend time together and burn calories at the same time. Make it a scavenger hunt and locate different animals, trees and landmarks along the way.

We hope these 9 Tips To Staying Healthier This Valentine’s Day help to get your creative juices flowing. Wishing you and your loved one a Happy and Healthy Valentine’s Day!
